Psychodynamic Couples Treatment

The theory of behavior offered by psychoanalysis is a valuable resource for treating the difficulties couples bring into treatment. Psychoanalysis recognizes the importance of unconscious forces in an individual’s mental life and gives us a pathway to understand and work with the emotional aspects of personality. These unconscious forces impact all relationships and are the primary foundation of the conflicts couples bring into treatment. We will discuss how to apply such core psychoanalytic concepts as transference/countertransference, projection, projective identification, enactment, and interpretation to our work with couples. We will consider the importance of working with couples to identify the unconscious beliefs each individual has about what it means to be a couple and the impact of these beliefs on the couple’s dynamic. Also, we will explore the idea of the couple’s relationship being the “individual” in our psychoanalytic couples work and the importance of working towards the goal of the couple developing a capacity to observe the self in relationship to the other.

Course Objectives – Participants will be able to:
  1. Identify the role of transference/countertransference and projection in the couple’s treatment.
  2. Recognize the timing of the use of interpretation and the therapeutic benefit of interpretation in couples’ treatment.
  3. Assess a couple’s appropriateness for treatment.
  4. Understand the use of containment, modeling and education about unconscious processes in the treatment.
