SUMMARY:BBL | The Libidinal Drive in Neutral: Indecision and inaction in psychoanalytic treatment
DESCRIPTION:Brown Bag Lunch Series | The Libidinal Drive in Neutral: Indecision and inaction in psychoanalytic treatment \nwith Harlan Tenenbaum\, JD\, Psychoanalytic Candidate \nWednesday\, October 28\, 2026 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EST \nOn Zoom Only – 1 CE \nParticipation is FREE \n$17 Admin Fee for each CE \nRegistration closes October 21 at 10:00 AM EST \nREGISTER NOW\n\nDo you have patients who seem to be stuck? \nThese individuals can present as capable\, intelligent\, possessing the information needed to make a decision or act\, yet still struggle to do so? \nWhat motivates them to remain stuck? \nThis presentation examines indecision and inaction through a six-year psychoanalytic case study of a young man who\, despite intelligence and insight\, cannot commit to work\, school\, or independence. It reviews how Freudian\, object relations\, self psychology\, modern analytic\, relational\,\nand neuropsychoanalytic traditions each explain inaction. Across these perspectives\, a shared conclusion emerges: indecision is rarely about the choice itself but expresses developmental history\, internalized relationships\, and the unconscious need to protect important others\, as well as the self. \nThe presentation also highlights how Modern Psychoanalytic techniques such as commands\, object-oriented questions\, joining\, and carefully timed interpretation address resistance\, transference and the analyst’s own countertransference journey. \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify at least four psychoanalytic frameworks that explain indecision and inaction.\nExplain how passivity can function as an active\, protective defense\, including the narcissistic defense.\nDescribe interventions used to address resistance in a stuck patient: commands\, object-oriented questions\, joining\, and interpretation.\nRecognize how countertransference\, such as the urge to fix or boredom\, can signal the patient’s internal state and guide the analyst’s technique.\n\n\nMeet your speaker: Harlan Tenenbaum\, JD \nHarlan Tenenbaum\, JD\, is a psychoanalyst at the Princeton Center for Psychotherapy and an advanced candidate at the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis.
