But what happens when the therapist experiences resistance within the therapeutic relationship? \nCountertransference resistances—whether understood as induced responses or as elements of the therapist’s own emotional history—are common\, normal\, and often overlooked aspects of clinical work. Recognizing these reactions in real time is essential to maintaining a strong therapeutic alliance and supporting meaningful treatment progress. \nOne form of countertransference resistance is the impulse to over-gratify the patient. When difficult feelings arise\, therapists may feel pressure to provide quick relief\, avoid disappointment\, or prevent anger. While understandable\, this response can unintentionally interfere with the therapeutic process. It explores how early disruptions in emotional development and attachment can mobilize aggression in the service of restoring psychological equilibrium\, and how this repetitive process may evolve into shutdown states and compulsive patterns of self-regulation. \nAddiction is conceptualized as a substitute regulatory mechanism—one that temporarily manages overwhelming internal distress while simultaneously reinforcing dependency. DESCRIPTION:October 26 @ 9:00 am – 1:00 pm\, via Zoom\nOn Resistance – Adam Phillips webinar\nAdam Phillips is a psychoanalyst and one of the most influential essayists and thinkers writing today. He has authored over 20 books of essays and studies\, including On Kissing \, Tickling \, and Being Bored (1993)\, Becoming Freud: The Making of a Psychoanalyst (2014)\, Unforbidden Pleasures (2015)\, On Wanting to Change (2021)\, and his most recent works\, On Giving Up (2024) and On Second Chances: Shakespeare and Freud (2024\, co-authored with Stephen Greenblatt). His work\, widely translated and celebrated for its clarity\, depth\, and wit\, bridges clinical psychoanalysis\, cultural commentary\, and literary analysis. Phillips has held several academic positions\, including his current role as Honorary Visiting Professor in the Department of English and Related Literature at York University\, where he has taught since 2006. Phillips’ contributions extend far beyond the clinic\, addressing the intersections of human desire\, resistance\, and the unconscious both in individual and collective contexts. \nIn this lecture\, Adam Phillips will critically examine the concept of resistance in psychoanalysis\, exploring its central role in both clinical practice and theoretical discourse. Resistance\, often viewed as an impediment to therapeutic progress\, is integral to understanding the unconscious dynamics within the analytic encounter. Phillips will explore how resistance manifests not only in the patient’s reluctance to engage with painful or repressed material\, but also in the psychoanalyst’s own countertransference responses. He will argue that these resistances\, far from being mere obstacles\, are essential to the analytic process\, actively shaping its course and revealing deeper unconscious truths. She received a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis-NJ\, and she holds a Certificate in Psychoanalysis from the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis. Prior to becoming a psychoanalyst\, Ms Lapides spent a number of years teaching and working with adolescents. She has a clinical practice in Cedar Knolls\, NJ\, where she treats adults and adolescents. Students often encounter personal material—both in the classroom and in field placements—that can evoke unresolved feelings. Clinical settings may expose them to chaotic environments\, difficult staff dynamics\, systemic limitations\, and emotionally intense interactions with clients. \nIn such conditions\, the expectation to engage in self-reflection while managing clinical responsibilities can be overwhelming. Supervisors play a critical role in helping students process these experiences and remain grounded in their development. Just as important\, clinical supervision of supervisors provides a needed layer of insurance that the many difficult\, often subjective\, feelings assailing both therapist and supervisor are recognized\, processed and resolved. This process ensures most effective care for all involved in the delicate balance of the therapeutic process. \nIn this presentation\, we share our experiences as student and supervisor\, and how we navigated the complexities of clinical training.
