SUMMARY:BBL: Transgenerational Trauma: How it Haunts Treatment
DESCRIPTION:Brown Bag Lunch Series\nwith \nDr. Nancy Gerber\, PhD\, NCPsyA \nSeptember 18th 2024 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom – 1 CE \n\n\nWhat do we mean by transgenerational transmission of trauma? Transgenerational traumas are those that have not been fully processed or integrated and are passed along to successive generations. Fragments of the original trauma may become unconsciously embedded in the next generation or repeated and enacted in altered forms. \nIn “Ghosts in the Nursery” (1975)\, Selma Fraiberg\, a child psychoanalyst\, observes how the specter of parents’ unremembered\, conflicted histories leads to repetitive enactments in the parenting of children. In treatment\, patients may describe feelings that their lives are haunted by parents and ancestors. \nIn this workshop we will explore how trauma reverberates across generations and how early attachment affects the transmission of trauma. Symptoms associated with transgenerational trauma\, including aloneness\, depression\, and dissociative defenses\, will be explored. In addition\, case examples and therapeutic interventions will be presented and discussed. \nCourse Objectives – Participants will learn to:\n\nDefine transgenerational transmission of trauma and how it manifests as symptoms in successive generations.\nUnderstand how ruptures in early attachment relationships perpetuate the transmission of trauma.\nDescribe two therapeutic interventions with patients.\n\n\nDr. Nancy Gerber\, PhD\, NCPsyA | Dr. Nancy Gerber completed psychoanalytic training at the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis (ACAP)\, where she is a member of the faculty. She is the author of seven books\, including fiction\, memoir\, and poetry. Her chapbook\, “We Are All Refugees\,” is a series of poems describing how she was affected by her father’s experience as a refugee from the Holocaust. Her book of poetry and prose\, Fire and Ice\, was a finalist for a Gradiva Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis. \n\nFor questions or information email Cassio Campello at \nevents@acapnj.org or call 973-629-1002 \n\nACAP is an approved CE provider for:\nArt Therapists — Counselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nNJ Psychoanalysts — NJ Social Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \n For full CE Information- visit our website: https://acapnj.org/ce-information/

SUMMARY:BBL: Working with Envy\, the Green-Eyed Monster in the Treatment Room
DESCRIPTION:with Imke Oster\, BSc\, MALD\, MBA \nBrown Bag Lunch Series \n\nWednesday\, December 11\, 2025 \n12:00 – 1:00pm \nOn Zoom – 1 CE \nNo charge for workshop attendance. \n$17 administrative fee for each CE certificate. \n“Working with Envy\, the Green-Eyed Monster in the Treatment Room”\nEnvy is one of the seven deadly sins\, yet this emotion is experienced by nearly everyone at some point in their lives. As with all emotions\, there is a broad spectrum of how malignant or benign those feelings are. \nDespite the frequency of envy as a driving force in the maturation process\, little is written about the effect of this personality type on the therapeutic process. This workshop investigates how different schools of thought identify envy\, its origins in one’s psyche\, and ways a person’s life can be impacted by these powerful impulses. I will share a case demonstrating the way envy’s dominance shaped a patient’s life choices and relationships. We will then explore how\, using specific Modern Psychoanalytic interventions\, an effective treatment approach can be designed. \n  \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe some ways different psychological and psychoanalytic schools of thought define envy.\nArticulate the consensus about the psychic and environmental origins of envy.\nRecognize the cascade of defenses utilized by the envious person to protect their fragile ego from devastating interpersonal comparisons\, and recognize envy as a defense in itself.\nIdentify common countertransference resistances that emerge when working with the envious character.\nDesign at least 3 effective intervention strategies for successfully working with envious characters.\n\n\nImke Oster is completing her psychoanalytic training at ACAP\, in Livingston\, NJ\, and is a therapist at their North Jersey Consultation Center. Prior to becoming a clinician\, Imke worked in strategic management consulting and economic development. She co-founded a legal outsourcing firm\, and later sold it when shifting to the clinical mental health field. Imke also works as an executive coach\, combining her 25-year business experience and psychoanalytic training. SUMMARY:A Contemporary Psychoanalytic Perspective on Fathering: The Impact of the Father Function on Children\, Fathers\, and the Analytic Dyad | Co-sponsored with NJI
DESCRIPTION:An NJI (The New Jersey Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis) event\, co-sponsored by ACAP \nSunday\, February 2\, 2025 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm \nVia Zoom \nMichael J. Diamond\, PhD.\, FIPA \nIt is a wise father that knows his own child. – Shakespeare (The Merchant of Venice) \n\n  \nIn this two-hour workshop\, Michael Diamond discusses both the symbolic and the actual\, flesh-andblood father and the impact each facet of fathering has on both the child’s and the father’s development. The so-called “paternal function\,” more accurately termed the “symbolic function\,” signifies that a triadic matrix always exists psychically yet is not intrinsically gendered. Moreover\, an ever present “father in the mother’s unconscious mind\,” indicates that triangular relations operate within the mother/child dyad – including across heteronormative\, gay or non-binary\, and single parenting circumstances – that enables the ‘third’ to open up symbolic space. As an embodied other\, the actual father or surrogate (regardless of gender)\, operating as both a protective and attracting object as well as a separating agent serving as the “second other” to the mother\, is called upon to recognize the child’s otherness. Challenges to fathering arise from inescapable dependencies\, desires\, rivalries\, and absences or neglect. Recovering the “missing” paternal function in dyadically-oriented analytic space is often required as brief clinical material will illustrate. \n  \nLearning goals: \n• Describe and discuss the nature of the “symbolic” or “paternal function” and its relationship to actual\, flesh-in-blood fathering. \n• Demonstrate an ability to distinguish and utilize both so-called “paternal” and “maternal” functioning in clinical analysis. \n• Question classical psychoanalytic understandings of the role played by male and female genders in providing successful triangular functions and indicate more contemporary analytic contributions to contemporary parenting arrangements. \n• Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the paternal or symbolic function in clinical treatment and indicate how it applies to specific therapeutic intervention strategies. \n  \n2 Continuing Education Credit/Hours for Psychologists\, NJ Social Workers\, LPC’s and Psychoanalysts.

SUMMARY:BBL: Opioids\, Addiction & Clinical Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:with Cassio Campello\, MD\, LAC \nBrown Bag Lunch Series\nMarch 12\, 2025 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom Only – 1 CE \nParticipation is FREE. There is a $17 ADMIN FEE for each CE. \n\nAddiction is a complex bio-psycho-social condition influenced by neurobiological\, psychological\, and environmental factors. This Brown Bag Lunch will explore opioid addiction through affective neuroscience and neuropsychoanalysis\, drawing on the insights of Jaak Panksepp and Mark Solms to enhance our understanding and treatment approaches. \nPanksepp’s research highlights how opioid use disrupts the SEEKING system\, leading to compulsive substance use driven not only by pleasure but also by the need to alleviate distress and emotional instability. Solms further explains that addiction often reflects challenges in self-regulation and executive functioning\, where cravings can override impulse control. \nWe will examine the neural mechanisms of opioid dependence\, the psychological drivers of drug-seeking behavior\, and the social factors influencing recovery. Our focus will be on trauma-informed\, strengths-based\, and person-centered interventions to support individuals facing opioid addiction. \nJoin us for an engaging discussion on addiction and treatment. \n\nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\nIncorporate the bio-psycho-social framework of opioid addiction\, when assessing clients\, examining the interplay between neurobiological vulnerabilities\, psychological factors\, and social determinants in the development of substance abuse disorders.\nApply insights from affective neuroscience and neuropsychoanalysis to deepen clinical understanding of opioid addiction.\nRecognize the impact of emotional dysregulation and social isolation on substance misuse behaviors.\nIdentify some holistic approaches that address both neurobiological and psychosocial factors: evidence-based\, trauma-informed\, and person-centered interventions that support individuals struggling with opioid dependence in recovery.\n\n\nCassio Campello\, MD\, LAC \nCassio Campello de Menezes is a certified anesthesiologist in Brazil and a Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) in New Jersey\, currently training as a psychoanalyst at the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis (ACAP). SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Religion in the Psychoanalytic Session
DESCRIPTION:with Donald James Brash\, M.Phil.\, Ph.D \nBrown Bag Lunch Series\nApril 16\, 2025 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom Only – 1 CE \nParticipation is FREE. There is a $17 ADMIN FEE for each CE. \n\nMany individuals who seek psychoanalytic therapy hold religious beliefs that are deeply intertwined with their psychological well-being. For some\, faith provides a sense of meaning\, resilience\, and comfort. For others\, religious beliefs can contribute to distress\, guilt\, or internal conflict. As analysts\, we are often confronted with complex questions about the role of religion in our patients’ psychic lives—questions that challenge us to navigate transference\, countertransference\, and the fine line between psychological growth and defensive rigidity. \nThis workshop will explore the psychoanalytic dimensions of religion in the clinical setting. How do we distinguish between religious beliefs that foster psychological well-being and those that serve as rigid ego defenses? How should we respond when patients ask about our own religious views? What happens when we find a patient’s religious beliefs personally challenging or even objectionable? And how does religion shape a patient’s experience of authority\, morality\, and guilt? \nThrough clinical case discussions and theoretical exploration\, we will examine the ways in which religious belief systems manifest in the therapeutic space and how we\, as analysts\, can approach these encounters with sensitivity and depth. \n  \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n  \n\nAnalyze the role of religious beliefs in a patient’s psychological well-being.\nEvaluate the transference and countertransference dynamics that emerge when patients inquire about the analyst’s religious beliefs.\nApply psychoanalytic concepts to understand how religious belief systems influence a patient’s experience.\nDevelop clinical approaches for working with patients whose religious views may evoke personal discomfort or challenge the analyst’s own belief system.\n\n  \n\nDr. Donald J. Brash\, M.Phil\, Ph.D\n  \n\nDr. Donald J. Brash is Emeritus Professor at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University in St. David’s\, PA\, where he has taught for 28 years.\nAnother of his roles was to direct the Doctor of Ministry program\, in which he continues as Coordinator of Doctoral Projects.\nHe earned his MPhil and his PhD from Drew University in Madison\, NJ. Most recently\nHe was Resident Theologian at the Princeton United Methodist Church\, Princeton\, NJ.\nDr. Brash regularly participates in the meetings of the Psychology\, Culture\, and Religion group of the American Academy of Religion\, where he is an advanced clinical candidate and therapist at the North Jersey Consultation Center (NJCC).\n\n  \nDr. Brash has contributed to panel discussions on science and religion\, as well as on racism in politics and law enforcement. One of his current scholarly interests is the psychoanalysis of religious experience. \nHe has been studying psychoanalysis at ACAP for 13 years\, and hopes to earn the NCPsyA. \n\nACAP is an approved CE provider for: \n  \nArt Therapists \nCounselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nNJ Psychoanalysts \nSocial Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \n\nFor questions or information email Cassio Campello at events@acapnj.org \nor call 973-629-1002 \n

Students often encounter personal material—both in the classroom and in field placements—that can evoke unresolved feelings. Clinical settings may expose them to chaotic environments\, difficult staff dynamics\, systemic limitations\, and emotionally intense interactions with clients. \nIn such conditions\, the expectation to engage in self-reflection while managing clinical responsibilities can be overwhelming. Supervisors play a critical role in helping students process these experiences and remain grounded in their development. Just as important\, clinical supervision of supervisors provides a needed layer of insurance that the many difficult\, often subjective\, feelings assailing both therapist and supervisor are recognized\, processed and resolved. This process ensures most effective care for all involved in the delicate balance of the therapeutic process. \nIn this presentation\, we share our experiences as student and supervisor\, and how we navigated the complexities of clinical training. We will explore how modern psychoanalytic supervision can help contain emotional overload\, manage countertransference and resistance\, and support students in maintaining emotional balance. \nThese tools allow for a deeper understanding of clinical work and create space for growth\, resilience\, and meaningful therapeutic engagement. \n\nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n1- Recognize the importance of understanding emotional inductions from both patients and staff within clinical settings. \n2- Identify the benefits of consulting directly with patients and staff to enhance therapeutic and organizational insight. \n3- Analyze the interpersonal dynamics between students\, patients\, and staff to foster greater self-awareness and clinical effectiveness. \n4- Explore how supervisor resistance may impact the supervisory process and develop strategies to address it constructively. \n\nACAP is an approved CE provider for: \nArt Therapists \nCounselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nNJ Psychoanalysts \nSocial Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \n\n\nFor questions or information email Cassio Campello at events@acapnj.org  \nor call 973-629-1002
