SUMMARY:NJI Fall 2025 Conference with Adam Phillips
DESCRIPTION:October 26 @ 9:00 am – 1:00 pm\, via Zoom\nOn Resistance – Adam Phillips webinar\nAdam Phillips is a psychoanalyst and one of the most influential essayists and thinkers writing today. He has authored over 20 books of essays and studies\, including On Kissing \, Tickling \, and Being Bored (1993)\, Becoming Freud: The Making of a Psychoanalyst (2014)\, Unforbidden Pleasures (2015)\, On Wanting to Change (2021)\, and his most recent works\, On Giving Up (2024) and On Second Chances: Shakespeare and Freud (2024\, co-authored with Stephen Greenblatt). His work\, widely translated and celebrated for its clarity\, depth\, and wit\, bridges clinical psychoanalysis\, cultural commentary\, and literary analysis. Phillips has held several academic positions\, including his current role as Honorary Visiting Professor in the Department of English and Related Literature at York University\, where he has taught since 2006. Phillips’ contributions extend far beyond the clinic\, addressing the intersections of human desire\, resistance\, and the unconscious both in individual and collective contexts. \nIn this lecture\, Adam Phillips will critically examine the concept of resistance in psychoanalysis\, exploring its central role in both clinical practice and theoretical discourse. Resistance\, often viewed as an impediment to therapeutic progress\, is integral to understanding the unconscious dynamics within the analytic encounter. Phillips will explore how resistance manifests not only in the patient’s reluctance to engage with painful or repressed material\, but also in the psychoanalyst’s own countertransference responses. He will argue that these resistances\, far from being mere obstacles\, are essential to the analytic process\, actively shaping its course and revealing deeper unconscious truths. Moreover\, Phillips will investigate the relationship between resistance and psychoanalytic writing\, suggesting that the challenges of translating unconscious material into language parallel those encountered in clinical work\, further highlighting the productive potential of resistance in both therapy and theory.Following the lecture\, Phillips will engage in an interactive interview about his work\, inviting audience participation to explore the complexities of resistance and its broader relevance in psychoanalytic practice\, culture\, and society. This session will provide a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the theoretical underpinnings of resistance\, offering valuable insights into its implications for contemporary psychoanalysis and beyond. \nLearning Objectives:\n\nTo explore the role of resistance in psychoanalysis\, both in clinical practice and in the writing of psychoanalytic theory.\nTo explore the ways in which resistance functions as a dynamic force in shaping unconscious life\, identity\, and social structures.\nTo examine the relationship between resistance and the political dimensions of the unconscious\, including how resistance offers insight into individual symptoms and broader political and social dynamics.\n\nContinuing Education Credits/Hours:\nFor Psychologists: This program is co-sponsored by Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis (ACAP) and The New Jersey Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis (NJI). SUMMARY:BBL: Psychedlics and the Brain with Dr. Elizabeth Olson
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, October 22nd\, 2025 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM \nLocation: Online via Zoom (1 CE) \nCost: Participation is FREE / $17 Admin Fee for each CE \n*Registration for the lecture will close on October 22nd at 10:00 AM EST* \n\nWhat to Expect:\nPsychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is emerging as a powerful treatment for several mental health conditions. In this talk\, Dr. Olson will provide an overview of the potential psychobiological benefits of working with psilocybin\, MDMA\, and ketamine\, in conjunction with traditional psychodynamic therapy. This will be an opportunity to learn about these treatments and gain an understanding of how the brain changes in both the short and long term through the use of these medicines. \nDr. Olson will share information based on current research supporting their use in treating depression\, anxiety\, and post-traumatic stress disorder. She will explain how psychedelics increase brain plasticity and reopen critical periods\, creating the potential for the brain to shift default reactions and prior learning patterns. Therapeutic use of these medicines also creates opportunities for new emotional and relational experiences. In some cases\, these brain changes can be long-lasting\, offering much-needed relief from chronic distress. \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify the primary psychedelic medicines currently being researched and used therapeutically.\n\n\nDevelop some psychobiological mechanisms of psychedelics.\n\n\nRecognize brain changes associated with psychedelic use in psychotherapy.\n\n\nDescribe evidence supporting psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for mental health conditions.\n\n\nMeet your speaker:\nElizabeth A. SUMMARY:BBL: Social Justice in Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Brown Bag Lunch Series | Social Justice in Psychotherapy\nwith Dan Summer\, Ph.D \nJune 18\, 2025 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom Only – 1 CE \nParticipation is FREE. There is a $17 ADMIN FEE for each CE. \nThe registration will close on June 18 at 10 am EST \n\n\nThis engaging lecture will explore the importance of cultivating and maintaining a social justice perspective in clinical practice. Given that access to psychotherapy remains a privilege for many\, numerous communities continue to experience hesitancy or mistrust toward seeking mental health treatment. Contributing factors may include historical and ongoing experiences of racism\, pathologizing attitudes\, and a lack of attention to cultural and racial dynamics within the therapeutic space. \nDr. Summer will emphasize that social justice work extends beyond the therapy room and into the broader community\, where collaboration and mutual understanding are vital. The presentation will also address best practices in client screening and ongoing assessment\, including attention to trauma histories (of both counselor and client)\, intergenerational trauma\, intersectional identities\, and the development of cultural humility. Drawing on his clinical work with historically marginalized populations\, Dr. Summer will share real-world examples and reflect on the power dynamics that shape the therapeutic relationship. \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to:\n\nIdentify their social justice lens when working with clients.\nDevelop a greater understanding of cultural humility.\nRecognize a minimum of one action they can take or have taken to address social justice (or social injustice).\n\n\nDr. Dan Summer Ph.D\, LAC\, ATR-BC\, LPAT\, LCAT\, ATCS \nDr. Dan Summer\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Graduate Counseling Program in the School of Nursing and Health Services at Caldwell University. He holds a doctorate in Expressive Therapies from Lesley University. Dr. Summer teaches both art therapy and general counseling courses. His expertise lies in ecological systems\, specifically exploring how individuals connect with nature. This interest directly shapes his teaching\, guiding students to develop self-compassion and a broader awareness of their connection to all living organisms\, both human and non-human. \nDr. Summer has published on eco-art therapy\, arts based research\, and on social justice art programs. \nHe has also attended classes at ACAP while working toward achieving his counseling identity. \n\nACAP is an approved CE provider for: \nArt Therapists \nCounselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nNJ Psychoanalysts \nSocial Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \n For CE Information- visit our website\, https://acapnj.org/ce-information/ \n\nFor questions or information\, email Cassio Campello at events@acapnj.org  \nor call 973-629-1002

SUMMARY:Intro to Modern Psychoanalysis | Spring 2025 Dates - 7 Sessions - 10 CEs

Today evidence shows that analytic therapy has much to offer for the full range of emotional disorders. \nModern Psychoanalysis is especially relevant in a world where ideas of cure are connected more with taking away low-functioning defenses rather than redirecting them and building in new skills for resilience and well-being. \nThe course will introduce participants to the theory and practice of Modern Psychoanalysis. They will learn about unique intervention strategies based on emotional communication and how to use induced feelings and one’s own reactions to understand the case and unblock the course of treatment. \n  \nModern Psychoanalysis is a treatment approach that supports the ego with strategies that improve client compliance and cooperation in treatment. Originally developed to treat extremely regressed patients\, it has been adapted and applied to a wide range of disorders and settings. \nCourse Objectives\nParticipants will be able to: \n\nIdentify the emotional responses to cases and distinguish between objective and subjective countertransference.\nArticulate the emotional meanings of a range of intervention strategies\nApply modern psychoanalytic concepts to life experiences by providing examples of how they manifest\n\n  \n\nJudy Lapides\, NCPsyA\, SCPsyA\, is a National and New Jersey State Certified Psychoanalyst. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch Series | Ask the experts: Navigating dysfunction in mental health facilities

The registration will close on May 21 at 10 am EST \n\n\nNavigating the Emotional Challenges of Mental Health Training: A Student–Supervisor Perspective \nTraining in the mental health field can be both deeply rewarding and emotionally demanding. Students often encounter personal material—both in the classroom and in field placements—that can evoke unresolved feelings. Clinical settings may expose them to chaotic environments\, difficult staff dynamics\, systemic limitations\, and emotionally intense interactions with clients. \nIn such conditions\, the expectation to engage in self-reflection while managing clinical responsibilities can be overwhelming. Supervisors play a critical role in helping students process these experiences and remain grounded in their development. Just as important\, clinical supervision of supervisors provides a needed layer of insurance that the many difficult\, often subjective\, feelings assailing both therapist and supervisor are recognized\, processed and resolved. This process ensures most effective care for all involved in the delicate balance of the therapeutic process. \nIn this presentation\, we share our experiences as student and supervisor\, and how we navigated the complexities of clinical training. We will explore how modern psychoanalytic supervision can help contain emotional overload\, manage countertransference and resistance\, and support students in maintaining emotional balance. \nThese tools allow for a deeper understanding of clinical work and create space for growth\, resilience\, and meaningful therapeutic engagement. \n\nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n1- Recognize the importance of understanding emotional inductions from both patients and staff within clinical settings. \n2- Identify the benefits of consulting directly with patients and staff to enhance therapeutic and organizational insight. \n3- Analyze the interpersonal dynamics between students\, patients\, and staff to foster greater self-awareness and clinical effectiveness. \n4- Explore how supervisor resistance may impact the supervisory process and develop strategies to address it constructively. \n\nACAP is an approved CE provider for: \nArt Therapists \nCounselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nNJ Psychoanalysts \nSocial Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \n\n\nFor questions or information email Cassio Campello at events@acapnj.org  \nor call 973-629-1002

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Religion in the Psychoanalytic Session
DESCRIPTION:with Donald James Brash\, M.Phil.\, Ph.D \nBrown Bag Lunch Series\nApril 16\, 2025 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom Only – 1 CE \nParticipation is FREE. There is a $17 ADMIN FEE for each CE. \n\nMany individuals who seek psychoanalytic therapy hold religious beliefs that are deeply intertwined with their psychological well-being. For some\, faith provides a sense of meaning\, resilience\, and comfort. For others\, religious beliefs can contribute to distress\, guilt\, or internal conflict. As analysts\, we are often confronted with complex questions about the role of religion in our patients’ psychic lives—questions that challenge us to navigate transference\, countertransference\, and the fine line between psychological growth and defensive rigidity. \nThis workshop will explore the psychoanalytic dimensions of religion in the clinical setting. How do we distinguish between religious beliefs that foster psychological well-being and those that serve as rigid ego defenses? How should we respond when patients ask about our own religious views? What happens when we find a patient’s religious beliefs personally challenging or even objectionable? And how does religion shape a patient’s experience of authority\, morality\, and guilt? \nThrough clinical case discussions and theoretical exploration\, we will examine the ways in which religious belief systems manifest in the therapeutic space and how we\, as analysts\, can approach these encounters with sensitivity and depth. \n  \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n  \n\nAnalyze the role of religious beliefs in a patient’s psychological well-being.\nEvaluate the transference and countertransference dynamics that emerge when patients inquire about the analyst’s religious beliefs.\nApply psychoanalytic concepts to understand how religious belief systems influence a patient’s experience.\nDevelop clinical approaches for working with patients whose religious views may evoke personal discomfort or challenge the analyst’s own belief system.\n\n  \n\nDr. Donald J. Brash\, M.Phil\, Ph.D\n  \n\nDr. Donald J. Brash is Emeritus Professor at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University in St. David’s\, PA\, where he has taught for 28 years.\nAnother of his roles was to direct the Doctor of Ministry program\, in which he continues as Coordinator of Doctoral Projects.\nHe earned his MPhil and his PhD from Drew University in Madison\, NJ. Most recently\nHe was Resident Theologian at the Princeton United Methodist Church\, Princeton\, NJ.\nDr. Brash regularly participates in the meetings of the Psychology\, Culture\, and Religion group of the American Academy of Religion\, where he is an advanced clinical candidate and therapist at the North Jersey Consultation Center (NJCC).\n\n  \nDr. Brash has contributed to panel discussions on science and religion\, as well as on racism in politics and law enforcement. One of his current scholarly interests is the psychoanalysis of religious experience. \nHe has been studying psychoanalysis at ACAP for 13 years\, and hopes to earn the NCPsyA. \n\nACAP is an approved CE provider for: \n  \nArt Therapists \nCounselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nNJ Psychoanalysts \nSocial Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \n\nFor questions or information email Cassio Campello at events@acapnj.org \nor call 973-629-1002 \n
