SUMMARY:BBL | The Libidinal Drive in Neutral: Indecision and inaction in psychoanalytic treatment
DESCRIPTION:Brown Bag Lunch Series | The Libidinal Drive in Neutral: Indecision and inaction in psychoanalytic treatment \nwith Harlan Tenenbaum\, JD\, Psychoanalytic Candidate \nWednesday\, October 28\, 2026 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EST \nOn Zoom Only – 1 CE \nParticipation is FREE \n$17 Admin Fee for each CE \nRegistration closes October 21 at 10:00 AM EST \nREGISTER NOW\n\nDo you have patients who seem to be stuck? \nThese individuals can present as capable\, intelligent\, possessing the information needed to make a decision or act\, yet still struggle to do so? \nWhat motivates them to remain stuck? \nThis presentation examines indecision and inaction through a six-year psychoanalytic case study of a young man who\, despite intelligence and insight\, cannot commit to work\, school\, or independence. It reviews how Freudian\, object relations\, self psychology\, modern analytic\, relational\,\nand neuropsychoanalytic traditions each explain inaction. Across these perspectives\, a shared conclusion emerges: indecision is rarely about the choice itself but expresses developmental history\, internalized relationships\, and the unconscious need to protect important others\, as well as the self. \nThe presentation also highlights how Modern Psychoanalytic techniques such as commands\, object-oriented questions\, joining\, and carefully timed interpretation address resistance\, transference and the analyst’s own countertransference journey. \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify at least four psychoanalytic frameworks that explain indecision and inaction.\nExplain how passivity can function as an active\, protective defense\, including the narcissistic defense.\nDescribe interventions used to address resistance in a stuck patient: commands\, object-oriented questions\, joining\, and interpretation.\nRecognize how countertransference\, such as the urge to fix or boredom\, can signal the patient’s internal state and guide the analyst’s technique.\n\n\nMeet your speaker: Harlan Tenenbaum\, JD \nHarlan Tenenbaum\, JD\, is a psychoanalyst at the Princeton Center for Psychotherapy and an advanced candidate at the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis. A former attorney and adoption policy expert\, he previously served as CEO of Adoption House International and Legal Adviser to the National Council for Adoption. His work on international adoption and family law has been widely published\, and he received the Angel of Adoption Award from the U.S. Congress. \nEmail: htenenbaum@gmail.com \nACAP is an approved CE provider for: \nArt Therapists \nCounselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nPsychoanalysts \nSocial Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \nClick here for full information on \nCE @ ACAP/BGSP-NJ \nFor questions or additional information\, \ncontact us at events@acapnj.org or 973-629-1002. \nLearn about ACAP’s CE programs and nationally accredited \nPsychoanalytic Certificate program: \nwww.acapnj.org \nLearn about BGSP-NJ’s regionally accredited MA’s in \nClinical Mental Health Counseling and in Psychoanalysis: \nnj.bgsp.edu

By allowing clients to introduce topics without interference\, the clinician listens to the client’s story\, mode of communication and the story that is not being told. \nThe untold story is analyzed silently as the unconscious communication is reported in dreams\, projections\, defense mechanisms\, resistances and transference communications. After listening attentively\, the clinician intervenes with questions\, not interpretations\, in order to strengthen the ego. \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\nIDENTIFY: unconscious communication reported in dreams\, projections\, defense mechanisms\, resistances\, and transference communications.\nLISTEN as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist.\nEXPLORE communications for their symbolic meanings.\nDESIGN INTERVENTIONS that can empower the client and strengthen the ego.\nASSESS the impact of specific interventions to facilitate progressive communication.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe One-Year Program @ ACAP \nOur program consists of four courses over one year.
