SUMMARY:Introduction to Modern Psychoanalysis
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Judy Lapides\, MACMHC\, NCPsyA\, NJSCPsyA \nBegins Tues May 26\, 2026| 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM EST \nDates: 5/26\, 6/2\, 6/9\, 6/16\, 6/23\, 6/30 \nOn Zoom Only – 10 CEUs \n$350 + $17 Admin Fee for each CE \nRegistration closes MAY 26TH \n\n  \nUnderstanding motivation\, impulses and how we help people recognize choices in life! \nPsychodynamic theory and practice has evolved a long way since the early days of psychoanalysis. Today evidence shows that analytic therapy has much to offer for the full range of emotional disorders. Modern Psychoanalysis is especially relevant in a world where ideas of cure are connected more with taking away low-functioning defenses rather than redirecting them and building in new skills for resilience and well-being. The course will introduce participants to the theory and practice of Modern Psychoanalysis. They will learn about unique intervention strategies based on emotional communication and how to use induced feelings and one’s own reactions to understand the case and unblock the course of treatment. Modern Psychoanalysis is a treatment approach that supports the ego with strategies that improve client compliance and cooperation in treatment. Originally developed to treat extremely regressed patients\, it has been adapted and applied to a wide range of disorders and settings. \n  \nParticipants will be able to: \nIDENTIFY: the emotional responses to cases and distinguish between objective and subjective countertransference. \nARTICULATE: the emotional meanings of a range of intervention strategies. \nAPPLY: modern psychoanalytic concepts to life experiences by providing examples of how they manifest. \n\nJudy Lapides\, is a National and New Jersey State Certified psychoanalyst. She received a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis- NJ\, and she holds a Certificate in Psychoanalysis from the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis. Prior to becoming a psychoanalyst\, Ms. Lapides spent a number of years teaching and working with adolescents. She has a clinical practice in Morristown\, NJ\, where she treats adults and adolescents. Ms Lapides is presently on the faculty of ACAP and BGSP-NJ

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch Series | The Subject of Suicide: What’s Going on in the Mind of the Suicidal Patient?
DESCRIPTION:with Robert Brill\, LCSW\, NCPsyA \nWednesday\, June 24th\, 2026 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EST \nOn Zoom Only – 1 CE \nParticipation is FREE \n$17 Admin Fee for each CE \nRegistration closes June 24TH at 10:00 AM EST \n\n  \n“WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE MIND OF THE SUICIDAL PATIENT ?” \nThis is a question many of us want to understand\, particularly as it applies to our patients\, ourselves\, and the world at large. \nTwo British practitioners\, one a psychiatrist/psychoanalyst and the other an analyst specializing in work with children and adolescents\, write a penetrating treatment of the subject. The title is Working in the Dark: Understanding the Pre-suicide State of Mind\, by Donald Campbell and Rob Hale\, which explores the pre-suicidal mind of the individual. \nWe know that understanding the mind of our patients gives us insight into their lives\, their emotions\, and their aims in life. More than a few of my patients have contemplated suicide; some have even tried it. There are some that have succeeded. This has a profound effect on the therapist. \nAt our Brown Bag Lunch\, we will examine Freud’s views on the subject of suicide\, and how it is a form of acting out. We will consider the warning signs for suicide\, and what possible ingredients might go into the mind of the person considering suicide. Of course\, it is important to understand the ways the transference/countertransference dynamic plays into this clinical situation. \nThere are other ideas that we should explore as well. It would do us good to consider the anguish that leads individuals to consider suicide. It is also important to think about the role that hope plays in the individual who makes a suicidal plan. Looking at the history of studying suicide also tells us a good bit about where we’ve been and where we’re going on the subject. \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\nIDENTIFY AND DESCRIBE The common warning signs associated with suicide risk.\nEXPLAIN the “three wishes” often experienced by individuals considering suicide and discuss how these wishes inform clinical understanding and intervention.\nRECOGNIZE AND REFLECT on countertransference reactions that may arise when working with suicidal individuals\, and discuss how awareness of these reactions can enhance assessment\, treatment\, and therapeutic engagement.\n\n\nRobert Brill\, LCSW\, NCPsyA\, is a practicing\, licensed clinical social worker and psychoanalyst based in Louisville\, Kentucky. He trained at the Kentucky Psychoanalytic Institute and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. \nBrill is an Advanced Certificate Candidate at ACAP and has been taking classes since 2020. He has worked in addictions treatment\, leading groups focused on family-of-origin work. Brill has been in private practice in the Louisville area since 1993\, working with individuals\, couples\, and groups. \nEmail: brillrs@gmail.com \n  \nACAP is an approved CE provider for: \nArt Therapists \nCounselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nPsychoanalysts \nSocial Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \nClick here for full information on \nCE @ ACAP/BGSP-NJ \n\n\nFor questions or additional information\, \ncontact us at events@acapnj.org or 973-629-1002. \n\nLearn about ACAP’s CE programs and nationally accredited \nPsychoanalytic Certificate program: \nwww.acapnj.org \nLearn about BGSP-NJ’s regionally accredited MA’s in \nClinical Mental Health Counseling and in Psychoanalysis: \nnj.bgsp.edu
