SUMMARY:BBL: Opioids\, Addiction & Clinical Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:with Cassio Campello\, MD\, LAC \nBrown Bag Lunch Series\nMarch 12\, 2025 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom Only – 1 CE \nParticipation is FREE. There is a $17 ADMIN FEE for each CE. \n\nAddiction is a complex bio-psycho-social condition influenced by neurobiological\, psychological\, and environmental factors. This Brown Bag Lunch will explore opioid addiction through affective neuroscience and neuropsychoanalysis\, drawing on the insights of Jaak Panksepp and Mark Solms to enhance our understanding and treatment approaches. \nPanksepp’s research highlights how opioid use disrupts the SEEKING system\, leading to compulsive substance use driven not only by pleasure but also by the need to alleviate distress and emotional instability. Solms further explains that addiction often reflects challenges in self-regulation and executive functioning\, where cravings can override impulse control. \nWe will examine the neural mechanisms of opioid dependence\, the psychological drivers of drug-seeking behavior\, and the social factors influencing recovery. Our focus will be on trauma-informed\, strengths-based\, and person-centered interventions to support individuals facing opioid addiction. \nJoin us for an engaging discussion on addiction and treatment. \n\nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\nIncorporate the bio-psycho-social framework of opioid addiction\, when assessing clients\, examining the interplay between neurobiological vulnerabilities\, psychological factors\, and social determinants in the development of substance abuse disorders.\nApply insights from affective neuroscience and neuropsychoanalysis to deepen clinical understanding of opioid addiction.\nRecognize the impact of emotional dysregulation and social isolation on substance misuse behaviors.\nIdentify some holistic approaches that address both neurobiological and psychosocial factors: evidence-based\, trauma-informed\, and person-centered interventions that support individuals struggling with opioid dependence in recovery.\n\n\nCassio Campello\, MD\, LAC \nCassio Campello de Menezes is a certified anesthesiologist in Brazil and a Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) in New Jersey\, currently training as a psychoanalyst at the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis (ACAP). SUMMARY:A Contemporary Psychoanalytic Perspective on Fathering: The Impact of the Father Function on Children\, Fathers\, and the Analytic Dyad | Co-sponsored with NJI
DESCRIPTION:An NJI (The New Jersey Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis) event\, co-sponsored by ACAP \nSunday\, February 2\, 2025 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm \nVia Zoom \nMichael J. Diamond\, PhD.\, FIPA \nIt is a wise father that knows his own child. – Shakespeare (The Merchant of Venice) \n\n  \nIn this two-hour workshop\, Michael Diamond discusses both the symbolic and the actual\, flesh-andblood father and the impact each facet of fathering has on both the child’s and the father’s development. The so-called “paternal function\,” more accurately termed the “symbolic function\,” signifies that a triadic matrix always exists psychically yet is not intrinsically gendered. Moreover\, an ever present “father in the mother’s unconscious mind\,” indicates that triangular relations operate within the mother/child dyad – including across heteronormative\, gay or non-binary\, and single parenting circumstances – that enables the ‘third’ to open up symbolic space. As an embodied other\, the actual father or surrogate (regardless of gender)\, operating as both a protective and attracting object as well as a separating agent serving as the “second other” to the mother\, is called upon to recognize the child’s otherness. Challenges to fathering arise from inescapable dependencies\, desires\, rivalries\, and absences or neglect. Recovering the “missing” paternal function in dyadically-oriented analytic space is often required as brief clinical material will illustrate. \n  \nLearning goals: \n• Describe and discuss the nature of the “symbolic” or “paternal function” and its relationship to actual\, flesh-in-blood fathering. \n• Demonstrate an ability to distinguish and utilize both so-called “paternal” and “maternal” functioning in clinical analysis. \n• Question classical psychoanalytic understandings of the role played by male and female genders in providing successful triangular functions and indicate more contemporary analytic contributions to contemporary parenting arrangements. \n• Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the paternal or symbolic function in clinical treatment and indicate how it applies to specific therapeutic intervention strategies. \n  \n2 Continuing Education Credit/Hours for Psychologists\, NJ Social Workers\, LPC’s and Psychoanalysts.

SUMMARY:BBL: Backing off the Cliff: Working With High Functioning Autism Clients (Level One-ASD)
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Brown Bag Lunch Series \nBacking off the Cliff: Working With High Functioning Autism Clients (Level One-ASD) \nwith George Grant\, LPC \nJanuary 22\, 2025 12:00 – 1:00pm \nOn Zoom Only – 1 CE \nParticipation is free. There is a $17 admin fee for each CE. \n\n  \nSome might trace the origins of autism and schizophrenia back to Ovid’s star-crossed romance of Narcissus and Echo\, who each existed alone in their worlds. Narcissus had an impenetrable emotional boundary\, allowing no one in. Echo had no boundaries and saw no difference between herself and others. Each remained alone in the world in their own way\, making a relationship impossible. \nWe will discuss the concept of adhesive identification\, the narcissism that can develop as a different response to autism’s inner stimulus bombardment\, and the somatic transference that may occur when working with autistic people. How can cultivating an observing ego\, activities that foster mentalization and imagination\, and object-oriented activities help? How can they bring about social interactions? \n\nRecently\, neuroscience has placed autism at one end of a scale of developmental neural pruning\, when the brain sloughs off synaptic connections or accumulated\, \nbut no longer needed learning\, and psychosis at the other. \nWith this the under-pruned autistic brain calls for socio-emotional interaction that differs from that needed by the excessively pruned brain of someone in psychosis. \nWe will be considering:\n\nThe concept of contact functioning as a relationship preservative intervention.\nThe concept of neural pruning.\nInterventions to promote a sense of safety.\nInterventions addressing stimulation regulation techniques in the face of meltdowns or withdrawal\, and strategies for maximizing the power of intuition and imagination.\n\nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to:\n\nIdentify the three types of patients in Adhesive Identification.\nUnderstand narcissistic identification as it pertains to Autism Spectrum Disorders.\nUnderstand the concept of Neural Pruning.\nDesign therapeutic interventions based on contact functioning for an underpruned brain.\nDescribe the importance of intuition and imagination in interventions with patients on the spectrum.\n\n  \n\nMr. Grant started working life as an electrical engineer in telecom. During the telecom bust of the early 2000s\, he turned the crisis into greater meaning by becoming a high school physics teacher. In an effort for this recovering engineer to better understand his students\, he started taking a class each semester in the evening at ACAP in Livingston\, NJ\, in 2007. Today\, Mr. Grant has an MA in Mental Health Counseling from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis\, holds an ABAP-accredited psychoanalytic certificate from ACAP\, is a licensed professional counselor\, and is a state-certified psychoanalyst in the State of NJ. \nHe has retired from teaching\, has a growing clinical practice\, and has been one of the founding members of iStrive\, a program for young adults on the spectrum who have aged out of other programs. He has also recently facilitated groups part-time at the JCNV for three years and works for Monmouth Integrative Counseling. Mr. Grant also holds a BSEE and an MBA and has endorsements in teaching mathematics and physical science at the secondary level from NJ. \n\nACAP is an approved CE provider for: \nArt Therapists \nCounselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nNJ Psychoanalysts \nNJ Social Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \n For CE Information- visit our website\, https://acapnj.org/ce-information/ \n\nFor questions or information email Cassio Campello at events@acapnj.org  \nor call 973-629-1002

SUMMARY:BBL: Working with Envy\, the Green-Eyed Monster in the Treatment Room
DESCRIPTION:with Imke Oster\, BSc\, MALD\, MBA \nBrown Bag Lunch Series \n\nWednesday\, December 11\, 2025 \n12:00 – 1:00pm \nOn Zoom – 1 CE \nNo charge for workshop attendance. \n$17 administrative fee for each CE certificate. \n“Working with Envy\, the Green-Eyed Monster in the Treatment Room”\nEnvy is one of the seven deadly sins\, yet this emotion is experienced by nearly everyone at some point in their lives. As with all emotions\, there is a broad spectrum of how malignant or benign those feelings are. \nDespite the frequency of envy as a driving force in the maturation process\, little is written about the effect of this personality type on the therapeutic process. This workshop investigates how different schools of thought identify envy\, its origins in one’s psyche\, and ways a person’s life can be impacted by these powerful impulses. I will share a case demonstrating the way envy’s dominance shaped a patient’s life choices and relationships. We will then explore how\, using specific Modern Psychoanalytic interventions\, an effective treatment approach can be designed. \n  \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe some ways different psychological and psychoanalytic schools of thought define envy.\nArticulate the consensus about the psychic and environmental origins of envy.\nRecognize the cascade of defenses utilized by the envious person to protect their fragile ego from devastating interpersonal comparisons\, and recognize envy as a defense in itself.\nIdentify common countertransference resistances that emerge when working with the envious character.\nDesign at least 3 effective intervention strategies for successfully working with envious characters.\n\n\nImke Oster is completing her psychoanalytic training at ACAP\, in Livingston\, NJ\, and is a therapist at their North Jersey Consultation Center. Prior to becoming a clinician\, Imke worked in strategic management consulting and economic development. She co-founded a legal outsourcing firm\, and later sold it when shifting to the clinical mental health field. SUMMARY:BBL: Working with Couples: Modern Psychoanalytic Techniques
DESCRIPTION:with Melissa Dropkin\, LCSW \n\nBrown Bag Lunch Series\nFREE WORKSHOP \nWednesday\, November 20\, 2024\, 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom – 1 CE* \n*$17 CE Administrative Fee \n\n\nMarriage is difficult. Two different people. Two different sets of values. How can marriages actually function well? This workshop will explore\, through the case of Bryce and Lara\, whose real identities are completely disguised\, how a Modern Psychoanalytic approach can help a marriage function better\, and even thrive. We will also examine the views\, rooted in Modern Psychoanalytic theory and technique\, that helped me to support and strengthen this marriage. \nMy grandmother\, Dr. Shirley Love\, believed in the notion that Modern Psychoanalysts do not simply treat individuals\, but need to engage the family in order to effectively treat the patient. Dr. Love stated that\, “psychoanalysts are inevitably family therapists. In treatment patients reveal verbally\, behaviorally\, and transferentially\, preoedipal and oedipal ties to their families of origin\, and often request that family members and spouses participate more actively in their therapy.” As with Dr. Love’s notion of family therapy\, couples counseling involves the dyad as the patient\, bringing all their emotional ties to early patterns into sessions. This requires a special balancing by the therapist keeping the couples unit center stage\, while being mindful of the unique personality and needs of each partner. \nCouples work is complex. How can we effectively treat the couple who is the real patient in therapy office\, while addressing the needs of each individual in the process? What are some therapeutic interventions that can help defuse tensions in couples counseling\, helping each partner be more accessible and able to resolve emotional roadblocks to partnering? \nCourse Objectives – Participants will learn to: \n\nIdentify persistent latent conflicts that exist in a marriage or couple\, as in the case of Bryce and Lara.\nFormulate a couples’ treatment plan utilizing foundational concepts and techniques discussed in this workshop.\nDescribe and define at least two therapeutic interventions that can help defuse tensions in couples therapy.\n\n\nMelissa Dropkin is a psychotherapist with a private practice in northern New Jersey. She works with individuals\, couples\, families\, and children. Ms. Dropkin is a graduate of the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service with a Master of Social Work. She is also a certified K-12 English Education teacher through William Paterson University. Ms. Dropkin has spent her entire career as a private practitioner seeing patients remotely and in person. She maintains a philosophy that the most important aspect of clinical work is the relationship bond formed between therapists and those in their offices looking to find ways to get along better in life. \n\nFREE WORKSHOP \nFor questions or information\, email Cassio Campello at \nevents@acapnj.org or call 973-629-1002 \nLearn about ACAP’s CE programs and \nnationally accredited psychoanalytic program \nat \nwww.acapnj.org \nLearn about BGSP-NJ’s regionally accredited MAs in \nClinical Mental Health Counseling \nand in Psychoanalysis \nat \nnj.bgsp.edu

SUMMARY:One Year Program | Analytic Listening
DESCRIPTION:One Year Program – Part II – 6 Weeks \nBegins Monday\, November 4\, 2024 \nAnalytic Listening \n10 CEs \n  \nInstructor: Judy Lapides\, NCPsyA\, SCPsyA \nMondays 6:00-7:30pm \n11/4\, 11/11\, 11/18\, 11/25\, and 12/9\, 12/16 2024 \nCost $350 \nvia Zoom \n\n  \nThe One Year Program consists of four courses over one year. It provides an opportunity for mental health practitioners and professionals in various disciplines to enhance clinical skills\, introducing innovative\, Modern Psychoanalytic principles\, theories\, and techniques. \n\nParticipants learn effective ways to design interventions to reverse maladaptive emotional and behavioral patterns. They quickly begin to master new\, practical clinical skills that can profoundly impact work with clients by promoting a collaborative\, self-defining approach to growth. \nACAP’s methods for working in challenging situations can make the difference between burnout and career satisfaction through covering basic concepts in Modern Psychoanalysis. \nParticipants receive a certificate of completion at the end of each course. \n\nThe Analytic Listening \nThis course introduces students to the unique way that a clinician listens as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. SUMMARY:BBL: Patterns of Adolescent Development: Before & After Global Crises
DESCRIPTION:Brown Bag Lunch Series \nPatterns of Adolescent Development: Before & After Global Crises \nwith Melanie McGrath Knuts \nFREE WORKSHOP \nOctober 16\, 2024\, 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom – 1 CE* \n*$17 CE Administrative Fee \n\n\nAdolescence is often a turbulent time marked by exploration and the concept of “identity crisis\,” as introduced by psychoanalyst Erik Erikson. However\, what happens when these challenges are amplified by global crises like the pandemic or traumatic war images spread rapidly by the internet since October 7th? \nThis workshop will revisit key psychoanalytic views on adolescent development\, particularly from Erikson and modern analyst Dr. Sidney Love. We will also discuss the sharp rise in anxiety among teens\, driven by smartphones and digital media\, which have reshaped how adolescents process stress and engage with the world. \nOur focus will be on changes in adolescent development post-COVID and after the events of October 7\, 2023. We’ll explore how these crises have deepened fear and uncertainty\, altering the way teens connect with themselves and others. \nThrough case presentations and discussions\, we will examine the impact on adolescent mental health and identify therapeutic approaches that best support resilience in these unprecedented times. \nJoin us to explore these new realities and strategies to help adolescents thrive. \nCourse Objectives – Participants will learn to: \n\nIdentify factors increasing adolescent anxiety in the 21st century.\nIncorporate awareness of the impact of global crises like COVID-19 and Middle East events on adolescent development.\nDesign therapeutic interventions in response to the changing needs of adolescents.\n\n\nMelanie McGrath Knuts\, LCSW: Melanie Knuts (pronounced: Ka-nootz) is a licensed Clinical Social Worker and Modern Psychoanalyst who has been working with families\, adolescents\, children\, and individuals in private practice for over thirty years.
