Given that access to psychotherapy remains a privilege for many\, numerous communities continue to experience hesitancy or mistrust toward seeking mental health treatment. Contributing factors may include historical and ongoing experiences of racism\, pathologizing attitudes\, and a lack of attention to cultural and racial dynamics within the therapeutic space. \nDr. Summer will emphasize that social justice work extends beyond the therapy room and into the broader community\, where collaboration and mutual understanding are vital. The presentation will also address best practices in client screening and ongoing assessment\, including attention to trauma histories (of both counselor and client)\, intergenerational trauma\, intersectional identities\, and the development of cultural humility. His expertise lies in ecological systems\, specifically exploring how individuals connect with nature. Students often encounter personal material—both in the classroom and in field placements—that can evoke unresolved feelings. Clinical settings may expose them to chaotic environments\, difficult staff dynamics\, systemic limitations\, and emotionally intense interactions with clients. \nIn such conditions\, the expectation to engage in self-reflection while managing clinical responsibilities can be overwhelming. Supervisors play a critical role in helping students process these experiences and remain grounded in their development. Just as important\, clinical supervision of supervisors provides a needed layer of insurance that the many difficult\, often subjective\, feelings assailing both therapist and supervisor are recognized\, processed and resolved. There is a $17 ADMIN FEE for each CE. \n\nMany individuals who seek psychoanalytic therapy hold religious beliefs that are deeply intertwined with their psychological well-being. For some\, faith provides a sense of meaning\, resilience\, and comfort. For others\, religious beliefs can contribute to distress\, guilt\, or internal conflict. As analysts\, we are often confronted with complex questions about the role of religion in our patients’ psychic lives—questions that challenge us to navigate transference\, countertransference\, and the fine line between psychological growth and defensive rigidity. \nThis workshop will explore the psychoanalytic dimensions of religion in the clinical setting. How do we distinguish between religious beliefs that foster psychological well-being and those that serve as rigid ego defenses? How should we respond when patients ask about our own religious views? What happens when we find a patient’s religious beliefs personally challenging or even objectionable? And how does religion shape a patient’s experience of authority\, morality\, and guilt? \nThrough clinical case discussions and theoretical exploration\, we will examine the ways in which religious belief systems manifest in the therapeutic space and how we\, as analysts\, can approach these encounters with sensitivity and depth. \n  \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n  \n\nAnalyze the role of religious beliefs in a patient’s psychological well-being.\nEvaluate the transference and countertransference dynamics that emerge when patients inquire about the analyst’s religious beliefs.\nApply psychoanalytic concepts to understand how religious belief systems influence a patient’s experience.\nDevelop clinical approaches for working with patients whose religious views may evoke personal discomfort or challenge the analyst’s own belief system.\n\n  \n\nDr. Donald J. Brash\, M.Phil\, Ph.D\n  \n\nDr. Donald J. Brash is Emeritus Professor at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University in St. David’s\, PA\, where he has taught for 28 years.\nAnother of his roles was to direct the Doctor of Ministry program\, in which he continues as Coordinator of Doctoral Projects.\nHe earned his MPhil and his PhD from Drew University in Madison\, NJ. Most recently\nHe was Resident Theologian at the Princeton United Methodist Church\, Princeton\, NJ.\nDr. Brash regularly participates in the meetings of the Psychology\, Culture\, and Religion group of the American Academy of Religion\, where he is an advanced clinical candidate and therapist at the North Jersey Consultation Center (NJCC).\n\n  \nDr. Brash has contributed to panel discussions on science and religion\, as well as on racism in politics and law enforcement. This Brown Bag Lunch will explore opioid addiction through affective neuroscience and neuropsychoanalysis\, drawing on the insights of Jaak Panksepp and Mark Solms to enhance our understanding and treatment approaches. \nPanksepp’s research highlights how opioid use disrupts the SEEKING system\, leading to compulsive substance use driven not only by pleasure but also by the need to alleviate distress and emotional instability. Solms further explains that addiction often reflects challenges in self-regulation and executive functioning\, where cravings can override impulse control. \nWe will examine the neural mechanisms of opioid dependence\, the psychological drivers of drug-seeking behavior\, and the social factors influencing recovery. He works as a psychotherapist at the New Jersey Consultation Center (NJCC) and is the Coordinator of the Applied & OutReach Division at ACAP. Additionally\, he teaches Biopsychology and Sensation and Perception at Caldwell University. \nWith over 20 years of medical experience\, Cassio practiced as an anesthesiologist at The Clinics Hospital of the University of São Paulo\, where he was part of the Emergency Anesthesia Team for four years. Diamond\, PhD.\, FIPA \nIt is a wise father that knows his own child. – Shakespeare (The Merchant of Venice) \n\n  \nIn this two-hour workshop\, Michael Diamond discusses both the symbolic and the actual\, flesh-andblood father and the impact each facet of fathering has on both the child’s and the father’s development. The so-called “paternal function\,” more accurately termed the “symbolic function\,” signifies that a triadic matrix always exists psychically yet is not intrinsically gendered. Moreover\, an ever present “father in the mother’s unconscious mind\,” indicates that triangular relations operate within the mother/child dyad – including across heteronormative\, gay or non-binary\, and single parenting circumstances – that enables the ‘third’ to open up symbolic space. As an embodied other\, the actual father or surrogate (regardless of gender)\, operating as both a protective and attracting object as well as a separating agent serving as the “second other” to the mother\, is called upon to recognize the child’s otherness. Challenges to fathering arise from inescapable dependencies\, desires\, rivalries\, and absences or neglect. There is a $17 admin fee for each CE. \n\n  \nSome might trace the origins of autism and schizophrenia back to Ovid’s star-crossed romance of Narcissus and Echo\, who each existed alone in their worlds. Narcissus had an impenetrable emotional boundary\, allowing no one in. Echo had no boundaries and saw no difference between herself and others. Each remained alone in the world in their own way\, making a relationship impossible. \nWe will discuss the concept of adhesive identification\, the narcissism that can develop as a different response to autism’s inner stimulus bombardment\, and the somatic transference that may occur when working with autistic people. How can cultivating an observing ego\, activities that foster mentalization and imagination\, and object-oriented activities help? How can they bring about social interactions? \n\nRecently\, neuroscience has placed autism at one end of a scale of developmental neural pruning\, when the brain sloughs off synaptic connections or accumulated\, \nbut no longer needed learning\, and psychosis at the other. \nWith this the under-pruned autistic brain calls for socio-emotional interaction that differs from that needed by the excessively pruned brain of someone in psychosis. \nWe will be considering:\n\nThe concept of contact functioning as a relationship preservative intervention.\nThe concept of neural pruning.\nInterventions to promote a sense of safety.\nInterventions addressing stimulation regulation techniques in the face of meltdowns or withdrawal\, and strategies for maximizing the power of intuition and imagination.\n\nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to:\n\nIdentify the three types of patients in Adhesive Identification.\nUnderstand narcissistic identification as it pertains to Autism Spectrum Disorders.\nUnderstand the concept of Neural Pruning.\nDesign therapeutic interventions based on contact functioning for an underpruned brain.\nDescribe the importance of intuition and imagination in interventions with patients on the spectrum.\n\n  \n\nMr. Grant started working life as an electrical engineer in telecom. During the telecom bust of the early 2000s\, he turned the crisis into greater meaning by becoming a high school physics teacher. In an effort for this recovering engineer to better understand his students\, he started taking a class each semester in the evening at ACAP in Livingston\, NJ\, in 2007. Today\, Mr. Grant has an MA in Mental Health Counseling from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis\, holds an ABAP-accredited psychoanalytic certificate from ACAP\, is a licensed professional counselor\, and is a state-certified psychoanalyst in the State of NJ. \nHe has retired from teaching\, has a growing clinical practice\, and has been one of the founding members of iStrive\, a program for young adults on the spectrum who have aged out of other programs. He has also recently facilitated groups part-time at the JCNV for three years and works for Monmouth Integrative Counseling. DESCRIPTION:10 Hours Art Therapy Clinical Supervision Course \nFee – $300 \nSaturday\, Jan 4th & Sunday\, Jan 5th\,  1 – 6:30pm EST \nCo-sponsored by BGSP-NJ & NAAP \nApply towards the Art Therapy Credentialed Supervisor Credential (ATCS) through the ATCB or renew and take CE for Supervision towards ATR-BC or ATCS. \nCounselors\, Art Therapists\, Marriage/Family Counselors\, LPC’s – Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis (ACAP) has been approved by NBCC.­ Approved Continuing Education Provider\, ACAP #5709. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. ACAP is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. \nNYS Creative Art Therapists – ACAP is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Art Therapists as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed creative arts therapists #CAT-0081. \n\n\nMany professions are eligible for CE credits for ACAP coursework:\n  \n•  Counselors\, Art Therapists\, Marriage/Family Counselors\, LPC’s – Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis (ACAP) has been approved by NBCC.­ Approved Continuing Education Provider\, ACAP #5709. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. ACAP is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. \n• NJ Psychoanalysts – ACAP\, an ABAP nationally accredited school\, is an approved Continuing Education provider for Psychoanalysts in New Jersey. \n• NJ Social Workers – BGSP-NJ partners with ACAP and is a NECHE regionally accredited institution\, and as such is an approved provider of CE hours for NJ Social Workers. \n• NYS Creative Art Therapists – ACAP is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Art Therapists as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed creative arts therapists #CAT-0081. \n• NYS Psychoanalysts – National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP) is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an Approved Provider of continuing education for licensed psychoanalysts. #P-0019. \n• NYS Social Workers – National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP) is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0168. \n• Psychologists – ACAP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. ACAP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
