SUMMARY:BBL: Working with Envy\, the Green-Eyed Monster in the Treatment Room
DESCRIPTION:with Imke Oster\, BSc\, MALD\, MBA \nBrown Bag Lunch Series \n\nWednesday\, December 11\, 2025 \n12:00 – 1:00pm \nOn Zoom – 1 CE \nNo charge for workshop attendance. \n$17 administrative fee for each CE certificate. \n“Working with Envy\, the Green-Eyed Monster in the Treatment Room”\nEnvy is one of the seven deadly sins\, yet this emotion is experienced by nearly everyone at some point in their lives. As with all emotions\, there is a broad spectrum of how malignant or benign those feelings are. \nDespite the frequency of envy as a driving force in the maturation process\, little is written about the effect of this personality type on the therapeutic process. This workshop investigates how different schools of thought identify envy\, its origins in one’s psyche\, and ways a person’s life can be impacted by these powerful impulses. I will share a case demonstrating the way envy’s dominance shaped a patient’s life choices and relationships. We will then explore how\, using specific Modern Psychoanalytic interventions\, an effective treatment approach can be designed. \n  \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe some ways different psychological and psychoanalytic schools of thought define envy.\nArticulate the consensus about the psychic and environmental origins of envy.\nRecognize the cascade of defenses utilized by the envious person to protect their fragile ego from devastating interpersonal comparisons\, and recognize envy as a defense in itself.\nIdentify common countertransference resistances that emerge when working with the envious character.\nDesign at least 3 effective intervention strategies for successfully working with envious characters.\n\n\nImke Oster is completing her psychoanalytic training at ACAP\, in Livingston\, NJ\, and is a therapist at their North Jersey Consultation Center. Prior to becoming a clinician\, Imke worked in strategic management consulting and economic development. She co-founded a legal outsourcing firm\, and later sold it when shifting to the clinical mental health field. Imke also works as an executive coach\, combining her 25-year business experience and psychoanalytic training. She serves on various Boards\, but most relevant to the mental health setting she is Vice Chair of the Board of the Ackerman Institute for the Family in New York City. \nImke Oster\, BSc\, MALD\, MBA \ni@imkeoster.com \n  \nFor questions or information email Cassio Campello at events@acapnj.org \nFor CE Information- visit our website\, https://acapnj.org/ce-information/ \nThere is a $17.00 Fee for CE Certification processing. \n  \nCounselors\, Art Therapists\, Marriage/Family Counselors\, LPC’s \nSocial Workers \nNJ Psychoanalysts \nNY Creative Art Therapists \nPsychologists \nNurses \n

SUMMARY:BBL: Working with Couples: Modern Psychoanalytic Techniques
DESCRIPTION:with Melissa Dropkin\, LCSW \n\nBrown Bag Lunch Series\nFREE WORKSHOP \nWednesday\, November 20\, 2024\, 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom – 1 CE* \n*$17 CE Administrative Fee \n\n\nMarriage is difficult. Two different people. Two different sets of values. How can marriages actually function well? This workshop will explore\, through the case of Bryce and Lara\, whose real identities are completely disguised\, how a Modern Psychoanalytic approach can help a marriage function better\, and even thrive. We will also examine the views\, rooted in Modern Psychoanalytic theory and technique\, that helped me to support and strengthen this marriage. \nMy grandmother\, Dr. Shirley Love\, believed in the notion that Modern Psychoanalysts do not simply treat individuals\, but need to engage the family in order to effectively treat the patient. Dr. Love stated that\, “psychoanalysts are inevitably family therapists. In treatment patients reveal verbally\, behaviorally\, and transferentially\, preoedipal and oedipal ties to their families of origin\, and often request that family members and spouses participate more actively in their therapy.” As with Dr. Love’s notion of family therapy\, couples counseling involves the dyad as the patient\, bringing all their emotional ties to early patterns into sessions. This requires a special balancing by the therapist keeping the couples unit center stage\, while being mindful of the unique personality and needs of each partner. \nCouples work is complex. How can we effectively treat the couple who is the real patient in therapy office\, while addressing the needs of each individual in the process? What are some therapeutic interventions that can help defuse tensions in couples counseling\, helping each partner be more accessible and able to resolve emotional roadblocks to partnering? \nCourse Objectives – Participants will learn to: \n\nIdentify persistent latent conflicts that exist in a marriage or couple\, as in the case of Bryce and Lara.\nFormulate a couples’ treatment plan utilizing foundational concepts and techniques discussed in this workshop.\nDescribe and define at least two therapeutic interventions that can help defuse tensions in couples therapy.\n\n\nMelissa Dropkin is a psychotherapist with a private practice in northern New Jersey. She works with individuals\, couples\, families\, and children. Ms. Dropkin is a graduate of the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service with a Master of Social Work. She is also a certified K-12 English Education teacher through William Paterson University. Ms. Dropkin has spent her entire career as a private practitioner seeing patients remotely and in person. She maintains a philosophy that the most important aspect of clinical work is the relationship bond formed between therapists and those in their offices looking to find ways to get along better in life. \n\nFREE WORKSHOP \nFor questions or information\, email Cassio Campello at \nevents@acapnj.org or call 973-629-1002 \nLearn about ACAP’s CE programs and \nnationally accredited psychoanalytic program \nat \nwww.acapnj.org \nLearn about BGSP-NJ’s regionally accredited MAs in \nClinical Mental Health Counseling \nand in Psychoanalysis \nat \nnj.bgsp.edu

SUMMARY:BBL: Transgenerational Trauma: How it Haunts Treatment
DESCRIPTION:Brown Bag Lunch Series\nwith \nDr. Nancy Gerber\, PhD\, NCPsyA \nSeptember 18th 2024 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom – 1 CE \n\n\nWhat do we mean by transgenerational transmission of trauma? Transgenerational traumas are those that have not been fully processed or integrated and are passed along to successive generations. Fragments of the original trauma may become unconsciously embedded in the next generation or repeated and enacted in altered forms. \nIn “Ghosts in the Nursery” (1975)\, Selma Fraiberg\, a child psychoanalyst\, observes how the specter of parents’ unremembered\, conflicted histories leads to repetitive enactments in the parenting of children. In treatment\, patients may describe feelings that their lives are haunted by parents and ancestors. \nIn this workshop we will explore how trauma reverberates across generations and how early attachment affects the transmission of trauma. Symptoms associated with transgenerational trauma\, including aloneness\, depression\, and dissociative defenses\, will be explored. In addition\, case examples and therapeutic interventions will be presented and discussed. \nCourse Objectives – Participants will learn to:\n\nDefine transgenerational transmission of trauma and how it manifests as symptoms in successive generations.\nUnderstand how ruptures in early attachment relationships perpetuate the transmission of trauma.\nDescribe two therapeutic interventions with patients.\n\n\nDr. Nancy Gerber\, PhD\, NCPsyA | Dr. Nancy Gerber completed psychoanalytic training at the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis (ACAP)\, where she is a member of the faculty. She is the author of seven books\, including fiction\, memoir\, and poetry. Her chapbook\, “We Are All Refugees\,” is a series of poems describing how she was affected by her father’s experience as a refugee from the Holocaust. Her book of poetry and prose\, Fire and Ice\, was a finalist for a Gradiva Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis. \n\nFor questions or information email Cassio Campello at \nevents@acapnj.org or call 973-629-1002 \n\nACAP is an approved CE provider for:\nArt Therapists — Counselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nNJ Psychoanalysts — NJ Social Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \n For full CE Information- visit our website: https://acapnj.org/ce-information/

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch: Juneteenth: Trauma Perspective in Clinical Practice
DESCRIPTION:with \nDr. Demetria DeLia & Rev. Dr.Glenmore Bembry\, Jr. \nBrown Bag Lunch Series\nJune 19th 2024 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nOn Zoom – 1 CE \n\n\nThe trauma of slavery has intergenerational effects that can unfold clinically through transference. This requires the therapist to be self-aware of the impact of societal values that may surface in countertransference enactments. Clients who have suffered through societal racism may bring personal unconscious family dynamics into the therapeutic relationship\, as well as issues of trust in a dyad where white therapists treat diverse clients. \n  \nOn June 19th\, 1865\, US General Gordon Granger took control in Galveston\, Texas\, informing enslaved people that they were free\, and the Civil War was officially ended. Thus\, Juneteenth was important to formerly enslaved people in this country as the date of their liberation. In Texas\, formerly enslaved people and their descendants celebrated the event annually\, keeping alive the importance of the 1865 date. Texas became the first state to name Juneteenth a state holiday. Still\, it was not until 2018 that the Texas Board of Education finally voted to document in school curricula that slavery was the leading cause of the Civil War. \n  \nOn June 17th\, 2021\, President Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth a national holiday\, recognizing that the history of slavery is a shameful blight America should admit rather than ignore. That prolonged 156-year resistance to acknowledgment highlights how the trauma of slavery can still be an open wound for many in its aftermath. We must be mindful of this cultural legacy\, especially among those seeking therapy who bring with them the historical enslavement of their ancestors. \n  \nCourse Objectives – Participants will learn to: \n\nTo sensitize clinicians to the racism integral to the founding doctrines of the United States\nTo understand how clients in psychotherapy may continue to be affected by the trauma of slavery\nTo identify transference and countertransference dynamics that unfold as a result of bias\nTo discuss the historical significance of Juneteenth and the importance of recognizing the psychic scars of slavery that clients may carry into current therapeutic relationships\n\n\nDr. Demetria DeLia\, PhD. \nDr. DeLia is a faculty member\, training analyst\, supervisor and Dean of Research at ACAP/ICPS. Dr. DeLia holds a MSW degree and a MA in Education and is a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Team. \n\nRev. Dr. Glenmore Bembry\, Jr. \nRev. Dr. Glenmore Bembry\, Jr.\, a native of Hawkinsville\, Georgia\, holds degrees from Montclair State University (BS)\, Colgate Rochester Divinity School (MDiv)\, and New York Theological Seminary (DMin). With 40 years as an American Baptist Senior Pastor\, he founded Life Quakes Coaching Consulting Ministries\, focusing on integrating faith and mental health. Currently\, he is pursuing certification as a mental health coach at ACAP. Dr. Bembry is Interim Pastor of the historic First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church in Newark\, NJ\, and has served as an Adjunct Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Bloomfield College for 32 years. \n\nFor questions or information email Cassio Campello at \nevents@acapnj.org or call 973-629-1002 \nACAP is an approved CE provider for: \nArt Therapists — Counselors \nMarriage and Family Counselors \nNJ Psychoanalysts — NJ Social Workers \nNY Creative Arts Therapists \nPsychologists \n For full CE Information- visit our website: https://acapnj.org/ce-information/

SUMMARY:NJI & ACAP Event | Spring Workshop: What Words Can't Say
DESCRIPTION:Howard B. Levine M.D. \nSunday\, June 2nd 2024\, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm\, via Zoom \nThe last day to register for this event is May 28th\, 2024. \n\n  \nHoward B. Levine\, is a member of APSA\, PINE\, the Contemporary Freudian Society and Pulsion\, on the faculty of NYU Post-Doc’s Contemporary Freudian Track\, on the Editorial Board of the IJP and Psychoanalytic Inquiry\, editor-in-chief of the Routledge Wilfred Bion Studies Book Series and in private practice in Brookline\, Massachusetts. He is the author of Transformations de l’Irreprésentable (Ithaque 2019) and Affect\, Representation and Language: Between the Silence and the Cry (Routledge 2022) and editor of The Post Bionian Field Theory of Antonino Ferro (Routledge 2022)\, The Freudian Matrix of Andre Green: Towards a Psychoanalysis for the 21st Century by André Green (Routledge/IPA 2023) and Andre Green’s On The Destruction and Death Drives (Phoenix/Karnac 2023). His co-edited books include Unrepresented States and the Construction of Meaning (Karnac 2013); On Freud’s Screen Memories (Karnac 2014); The Wilfred Bion Tradition (Karnac 2016); Bion in Brazil (Karnac 2017); The Clinical Thinking of W.R. Bion in Brazil (Routledge 2024); André Green Revisited: Representation and the Work of the Negative (Karnac 2018); Psychoanalysis and Covidian Life (Phoenix 2021); Psychoanalysis of the Psychoanalytic Frame Revisited: A New Look at Bleger’s Classical Work (Routledge/IPA 2022); On the Destruction and Death Drives by André Green (Phoenix 2023); and Autistic Phenomena and Unrepresented States: Explorations in the Emergence of Self (Phoenix 2023). ______________________________________________________________________________________ \n Psychoanalysis is the “talking cure\,” but the problems raised by language are complex\, paradoxical and perhaps unsolvable. At their most effective\, words play a vital role in psychic homeostatic regulation and the psychoanalytic process that is analogous to the architecturally structural role played by the keystone of an arch. The problem\, however\, is that words can be used to reveal or conceal\, to convey meaning or obscure\, distort\, hide\, fragment or evacuate meaning. And sometimes the very nature of language falls short of being able to capture and adequately communicate the psychic dimensions of our emotional lives. This presentation will explore the limitations of words and language in psychoanalysis from the perspective of the work of Freud\, Bion and Green \n. __________________________________________________________________ \n2 Continuing Education Credits/Hours Level: All levels The last day to register for this event is May 28\, 2024. \nFor registration: https://www.njinstitute.com/spring-workshop-what-words-cant-say/ \nFor more information please call 201-836-1065\, or visit us online at www.njinstitute.com
