SUMMARY:A Contemporary Psychoanalytic Perspective on Fathering: The Impact of the Father Function on Children\, Fathers\, and the Analytic Dyad | Co-sponsored with NJI
DESCRIPTION:An NJI (The New Jersey Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis) event\, co-sponsored by ACAP \nSunday\, February 2\, 2025 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm \nVia Zoom \nMichael J. Diamond\, PhD.\, FIPA \nIt is a wise father that knows his own child. – Shakespeare (The Merchant of Venice) \n\n  \nIn this two-hour workshop\, Michael Diamond discusses both the symbolic and the actual\, flesh-andblood father and the impact each facet of fathering has on both the child’s and the father’s development. The so-called “paternal function\,” more accurately termed the “symbolic function\,” signifies that a triadic matrix always exists psychically yet is not intrinsically gendered. Moreover\, an ever present “father in the mother’s unconscious mind\,” indicates that triangular relations operate within the mother/child dyad – including across heteronormative\, gay or non-binary\, and single parenting circumstances – that enables the ‘third’ to open up symbolic space. As an embodied other\, the actual father or surrogate (regardless of gender)\, operating as both a protective and attracting object as well as a separating agent serving as the “second other” to the mother\, is called upon to recognize the child’s otherness. Challenges to fathering arise from inescapable dependencies\, desires\, rivalries\, and absences or neglect. Recovering the “missing” paternal function in dyadically-oriented analytic space is often required as brief clinical material will illustrate. \n  \nLearning goals: \n• Describe and discuss the nature of the “symbolic” or “paternal function” and its relationship to actual\, flesh-in-blood fathering. \n• Demonstrate an ability to distinguish and utilize both so-called “paternal” and “maternal” functioning in clinical analysis. \n• Question classical psychoanalytic understandings of the role played by male and female genders in providing successful triangular functions and indicate more contemporary analytic contributions to contemporary parenting arrangements. \n• Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the paternal or symbolic function in clinical treatment and indicate how it applies to specific therapeutic intervention strategies. \n  \n2 Continuing Education Credit/Hours for Psychologists\, NJ Social Workers\, LPC’s and Psychoanalysts.

SUMMARY:BBL: Money Matters in the Psychotherapeutic Process
DESCRIPTION:with Patricia Ulis\, MSW\, LCSW \nBrown Bag Lunch Series \nFebruary 12\, 2025 12:00 – 1:00pm \nOn Zoom Only – 1 CE \n  \nParticipation is FREE. There is a $17 ADMIN FEE for each CE. \n\n  \nMoney holds a complex and multifaceted role in the therapeutic space\, influencing dynamics in ways that are both symbolic and concrete. For both patients and therapists\, personal feelings\, beliefs\, and unresolved issues about money inevitably enter the treatment room. These dynamics present unique opportunities to deepen the therapeutic work\, particularly through exploration in the transference. \nThis workshop explores the symbolic meaning of money in psychotherapy\, shedding light on its connections to power\, dependency\, self-worth\, and the perceived value of treatment. \nThrough case examples\, we will examine how discussions and tensions around fees and payments can serve as an entry point to understanding the patient’s and therapist’s underlying feelings\, conflicts\, and relational patterns. \nCourse Objectives – Participants will be able to:\n\nUnderstand different ways psychological schools of thought understand the symbolism of money/fee in treatment.\nIdentify transference and countertransference issues around money/the fee.\nRecognize feelings related to money/fee setting and its symbolic connection to value and worthiness for both the patient and the therapist.\nDefine intervention strategies to discuss the fee/payment\, that are clinically relevant.\n\n\nPatricia Ulis MSW\, LCSW \nPatricia Ulis is a highly experienced social worker with over 25 years in private practice\, dedicated to helping individuals\, couples\, and families navigate life’s challenges. Before establishing her practice\, she worked in outpatient settings\, supporting patients with chronic and severe mental illness\, which deepened her expertise in complex mental health care. \nMrs. Ulis has pursued advanced training in various therapeutic modalities\, allowing her to tailor her approach to each client’s unique needs.
