Course Objectives – Participants will be able to:
- IDENTIFY AND DIFFERENTIATE at least three psychological defense mechanisms (e.g., repression, displacement, projection, or denial) as manifested behaviorally by the characters within the play Hysteria.
- ANALYZE AND CONTRAST the clinical implications of Freud’s early trauma model versus his later fantasy model, outlining at least two ways this historical shift impacts the role of past memory in making current choices.
- EVALUATE AND DESCRIBE how cultural and political stressors (such as war, exile, and cultural trauma) impact the characters’ choices in Hysteria, illustrating how relationship dynamics are shaped by unconscious processes.
Terry Johnson’s play, Hysteria, will serve as a living case study. Attendees will witness the dynamic nature of the mind and identify conflicts inherent in cultures from the past through today through an account of the meeting between Freud and Dali. ACAP faculty will facilitate small group discussions following the live performance. The play examines coping in a time of war, seduction theory, and the creative drive among other themes.
