Money holds a complex and multifaceted role in the therapeutic space, influencing dynamics in ways that are both symbolic and concrete. For both patients and therapists, personal feelings, beliefs, and unresolved issues about money inevitably enter the treatment room. These dynamics present unique opportunities to deepen the therapeutic work, particularly through exploration in the transference.

This workshop explores the symbolic meaning of money in psychotherapy, shedding light on its connections to power, dependency, self-worth, and the perceived value of treatment.

Through case examples, we will examine how discussions and tensions around fees and payments can serve as an entry point to understanding the patient’s and therapist’s underlying feelings, conflicts, and relational patterns.

Course Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  • Understand different ways psychological schools of thought understand the symbolism of money/fee in treatment.
  • Identify transference and countertransference issues around money/the fee.
  • Recognize feelings related to money/fee setting and its symbolic connection to value and worthiness for both the patient and the therapist.
  • Define intervention strategies to discuss the fee/payment, that are clinically relevant.
