COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Clinical Supervision Courses

This course will address the Supervisory roles and functions within a comparative framework using mental health models, including counseling, social work, art therapy, and psychoanalytic approaches. The course will begin by defining the supervisory process and moving into the dimensions that build the supervisee-supervisor relationship. Topics will address the historical, theoretical, practical, ethical, and cultural aspects of supervisory work. The many functions of the supervisor are outlined, such as case review, evaluation, supportive intervention, education, and professional growth. Additional areas of focus will be on a range of supervisory settings from agency to private practice, learning and teaching styles, the parallel process while supervising a range of settings and populations, leadership styles, supervisor self-care and countertransference reactions to the supervisee, handling conflicts, building and maintaining relationship with peers and treatment collaborations and working within the culture of an organization. A range of supervision modalities will be explored, including group, individual, consultation, and educational formats. Integration of the models will build the participant’s identity and function as a supervisor. The course format is lecture, discussion, reading, and experiential small group activities.

The course will begin by defining the supervisory process and moving into the cultural dimensions that impact the supervisee-supervisor relationship and process. Topics will address the historical, practical, ethical, and cultural aspects of supervisory work. The course format is lecture, case review, reading, and experiential small group activities.

Ethical Issues in Clinical Supervision, 5 hours

This course focuses on practice and technique within a comparative framework within mental health models of supervision. The course will explore case examples stemming from various aspects of supervisory work from the beginning to the experience of a supervisor. The triadic relationship between the supervisor, supervise, and client will be defined through discussion of the application of technique to everyday supervisory challenges, reflecting a range of sites and settings. Participants are encouraged to bring their own case examples to integrate into the learning process.

Ethical Issues in Art Therapy and Mental Health Supervision, 5 hours

This course focuses on practice and technique broadly for mental health professions and narrows the application of ethics to art therapy practice. Case examples stem from various aspects of supervisory work with beginning to the experienced supervisor. The triadic relationship between the supervisor, supervisee, and client will be defined through discussion of the application of technique to everyday supervisory challenges, reflecting a range of sites and settings in which art therapists and mental health practitioners work. Participants are encouraged to bring their own case examples to integrate into the learning process.

Understanding Opioids, Opioid Addiction, and the Effects of Marijuana, 

1.0 hour Opioid; 0.5 hour Marijuana

This presentation will provide an overview of the opioid class of drugs. The impact of opioid use as a current epidemic is described. Use of the DSM V to identify criteria for diagnosis will be reviewed when considering cases in which opioid use is present and treatment options are presented. The effects of marijuana and its impact on everyday functioning are presented.

Working with Domestic Violence in Supervisory Practice, 4 hours

(offering 2 hours in January 2026 and 2 hours in April/May 2026)

This course addresses the unique dynamics and supervisory practices when working with domestic violence cases. The workshop is divided into four topics: psychological assessment, legal and ethical issues, transference and countertransference of the supervisor and supervisee, and intervention strategies.

Considerations for Telehealth in Supervision, 3 hours

(offering 2 hours on April 19, 2025)

(offering 1.5 hours in January 2027 and 1.5 hours in April/May 2027)

This course addresses telehealth practices Competence of the psychologist and related mental health professions and practices including: Standards of care for telepsychology services; Informed consent; Confidentiality of data and information; Security and transmission of data and information; Disposal of data and information and technologies; Testing and assessment when providing telepsychology services and Interjurisdictional practice. And considerations of these processes during supervisory practice.
