Techniques for Welcoming the Difficult Patient

Course description

Let’s think of the therapeutic relationship, even when working with the most difficultcases, as focusing on emotional assets a person brings to sessions, as well as the life, personality or developmental problems propelling them to the office

This perspective enhances and highlights the courageous, adaptive efforts of fragile egos that sustained the person during critical emotional challenges, but may now hinder progress in life. What if those quirky, even pathological traits, isolating and corroding development might be channeled as the strongest attributes for mature, productive functioning?

This workshop focuses on defining and demonstrating therapeutic interventions, verbal and attitudinal, that tap the individual’s unique resources and encourage movement from troubled to fruitful life experiences. Case vignettes demonstrate successful and flawed use of these techniques. Clinical examples from participants are encouraged
