ACAP serves as a community resource by offering, courses, graduate degrees, clinical programs and experiences, and Continuing Education (CE) opportunities to help build skills for those working with individuals and groups in the areas of interpersonal relationships, crisis resolution, education and mental health issues, and parenting. ACAP pioneered an expansion of studies of the mind and interpersonal relationships over the past three decades, developing new perspectives on how mind/brain/body interactions influence behavior. We have a 20+ year record of developing effective intervention strategy programs for improving teamwork and communication skills in clinical, academic and organizational settings.

ACAP is an educational and mental health resource, empowering individuals and organizations with practical, successful life strategies.

Whether a graduate of a degree program or our psychoanalytic certificate program, students are eligible to seek state recognition through licensing and/or certification of their academic achievements.

ACAP is nationally accredited by ABAP, the American Board for Accreditation in Psychoanalysis.  ACAP graduates are eligible to apply for state licensure or certification in NJ, NY, and VT as a psychoanalyst. Contact us for more information.

Who we are:

Combined with an accomplished board of trustees, exceptional directors and an expert faculty, the Academy of Clinical and Applied Psychoanalysis (ACAP), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has been “promoting potential and transforming lives” for over 35 years, delivering cutting edge treatment, modern psychoanalytic techniques and innovative ways to “treat and teach” the emergent needs of its patients and students.

What we do:

ACAP (www.acapnj.org) is a unique nonprofit organization in Livingston, New Jersey.  We seek to transform lives through:

TEACHING: Our Certificate program in Psychoanalysis helps candidates understand how people develop their emotional lives, and it teaches them to intervene in the intrapsychic life of clients.  Candidates integrate academic study with clinical work to understand patients’ repetitions and defenses, and they learn to utilize their emotional responses to understand and work with patients. We also have a partnership with the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, which offers master’s degrees in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Psychoanalysis.

TREATING: 5,000 hours of treatment through our North Jersey Consultation Center (NJCC) each year.  No one has ever been turned away due to psychological issues or payment difficulties.

TRAINING: Continuing education programs, conferences, and professional development are offered regularly to organizations, parents, mental health practitioners, teachers, and clergy, among others.

How we do it:

We provide 20,000 professional volunteer hours a year provided by ACAP directors, alumni, students and volunteers, offering our services.  Basically all of our income is from tuition and fundraising which supports our general operating expenses.

We are small but feisty and committed to serving the community. We are starting a program, iStrive, to help the rising number of young adults in our area on the autism spectrum who are aging out of usual services. We know we can help with our unique approach that we have applied to other problems like schizophrenia and dementia, as well as conflicts in the classroom or workplace.  This program is in keeping with our wish to serve the community, with a planned pilot beginning January, 2019.
