By the time we are five we can look in a mirror and know, “That’s me.” But who exactly is me, and what neurological, biochemical, constitutional, emotional or environmentally induced reactions shape the way this budding identity faces developmental challenges and crises ahead? Neuropsychoanalysis II examines the relationship between our evolving neurobiological brain and emerging mind’s adaptive or maladaptive responses in establishing a self. We explore how they result in either specific psychopathology, inability to thrive independently, or the basis for emotional resilience. We will study symptoms, behaviors, causes, prognoses, categorization, and treatment strategies for major disorders. Class material includes readings, videos, case presentations, guest lecturers, and lively group discussions. You need not be a neuroscientist or seasoned clinician to jump into this exciting exploration of paths to emotional disorders or resilience. Just bring a mind to be curious, stretch perspectives, and share ideas. *Fulfills either Elective or Theory requirements
