Have you ever had times where despite knowing you are knowledgeable and well-educated in your field, you have moments of feeling like a fraud? Have there been moments in a session where you think you don’t know what to say to a patient?
Why do those feelings occur at times? Is this a pattern? How can therapists use their own imposter feelings as insight rather than evidence of inadequacy? We will review psychodynamic understandings about how, where, and when those thoughts and feelings may originate. Pertinent theories will be reviewed, as well as the impact of personal life history and countertransference feelings, both objective and subjective.
Course Objectives – Participants will be able to:
- Describe unconscious dynamics leading to
- thoughts and feelings of Imposter Syndrome.
- Recognize five different personality types
- as described by Valerie Young, EdD
- Identify and understand countertransference feelings
- and their potential impact on clinical work with patients.
