Domestic Violence: Forgive or not to Forgive, that is the question?

Course Description:

Domestic Violence, emotional or physical can have devastating effect on the wellbeing of those who have been abused. As clinicians we see patients coming to our office with symptoms of depression, anxiety, intrusive memories, and low self-esteem. Although research has taken into account the positive aspects of forgiveness interventions, negative aspects are being explored as well.

Critics argue that forgiveness interventions may cause an increase in negative affect because it is trying they attempt to inhibit the individual’s genuine feelings towards the offender. This can result in negative self-feelings. To forgive is an individual’s choice; forgiving or not forgiving may be the solution to healing. Either path requires an unbiased view. Sitting with our clients requires us to provide a holding environment, follow the contact, and monitor stimulation levels.
In this workshop we will examine the concept to forgive or not to forgive and how to assist our patients in the choices they make.
